We had to fly Kathmandu-Bangkok (my first ever flight!) as Burma overland was not allowed and alternatives were difficult and limted by the Vietnam war etc. From Singapore we did not want to fly either and went by ship to Australia. I have since taken probably 500 or so flights but still prefer to use overland options to really experience the journey.

My understanding is that for safety reasons it is better to stick to Pelni rather than other ferry operators. If you do end up going by road, at least it is the dry season (or should be - sometimes the dry season is wet!), as the some roads can be a problem in the wet season (roughly Dec-March).

Personally, i wouldn't advise economy unless u can bear with all the smoke & chatter. Get the second class where u can always head back to seclusion & comfort after u've had enough interaction with the natives, & when night falls & there's nothing to entertain you. The voyage will take abt 27 hours. Frankly, nothing as gorgeous a sight as those in maluku to greet u along the way.
But the experience is one that will be etched in your memory i'm sure. Just get yourself very ready for the embarkment.;).
