CLASSIC CAR RESTORATIONS
The term 'restoration' in context to the vintage car world has taken on a definition of its own. For some people, a restoration is simply painting a car and replacing items as needed, while for others, restoration means an extensive disassembly and overhaul, with each piece getting rebuilt or replaced.
As a consumer, it's important to understand the basics of restoration levels for it can impact classic car values substantially. There are hundreds of ways to restore a vintage car or truck including but not limited to the following: i). Frame off restoration. Body of vehicle is completely taken off the frame and restoration includes body, frame, floor pans (top and bottom), etc. these restorations tend to be extensive and costly. ii). Rotisserie restoration. These restorations are when the body (or body and frame on a unibody vehicle) are disassembled and restored utilizing a rotisserie. Body of vehicle is completely taken off the frame and restoration includes body, frame, floor pans (top and bottom), etc. these restorations tend to be extensive and costly and iii). Cosmetic or driver quality restoration. These restoration are typically limited to cosmetic items including paint and body, interior, trim and emblems, etc. Within the three levels or restoration mentioned above, there can be varying quality from an in the garage / amateur restoration to a high dollar professional concours restoration. There is a universal 100 point grading system rating classic car conditions ranging from 100 being excellent to 20 being unrestorable.
In addition to the levels of restoration above, it's important to understand the type of restoration as well for it can also impact value substantially. Type of restorations include: i). Factory or stock restoration. This type of restoration is geared towards restoring the car or truck to stock specs from the factory as if it were new. These types of restorations use original or oem (original equipment manufacturer) where possible. Factory original restorations tend to bring the highest dollars from collectors. ii). Custom restoration. These types of restorations are geared towards builder preference over factory stock. These can be refereed to as customs or hot rods. Typically these vehicles will have custom paint work, aftermarket wheels, suspension upgrades, power plant transplants, etc. A specific sector of custom restoration vehicles is pro-touring or restomod / restomods which are custom built with a more modern street performance and creature comforts than the original factory vehicle.
Please note that WWVA is not a restoration shop nor do we restore vehicles to any degree.
For questions on what type or level of restoration of any of our vehicles in inventory please call our vintage sales expert today at 1-877-422-2940.
We provide approximately 75 HD images, and an HD video, in every one of our listings. Very few companies offer this much detail. We spend time inspecting and disclosing items on all of our vehicles; however, at the end of the day, we are not you... we highly suggest that you come and inspect the vehicle.

The description is an opinion only and should not be considered a complete description of any or all faults; it may not be relied upon nor taken as fact or otherwise a representation or warranty of any sort. Please note, we did NOT build or restore the vehicle. Vehicles are sold AS-IS, WHERE-IS with all faults known/unknown and with no implied warranty. Unless shown in the photographs, we do NOT have documentation, receipts, or photographs of the vehicle listed.

Willys Hurricane
ManufacturerWillys
Kaiser-Jeep
Also calledF-134
F-161
Production1950–1971
PredecessorWillys Go-Devil
Willys Lightning

The WillysF4-134 Hurricane was an inline-4piston engine and powered the famous Jeep CJ in the CJ-3B, CJ-5, and CJ-6 models. It was also used in the Willys 473 and 475 pickups, wagons, and sedan deliveries. It replaced the Willys Go Devil engine which was used in the Military Jeep and other early Jeep-based models like the Jeepster.

The Hurricane is one of the few 'F-Head' engines, and the only one well-known apart from those produced by Rolls-Royce and Rover. The 'F' comes from having one set of valves in the block, like a flat (or 'L') head, and one set in the head, like a modern OHV engine. The reason Willys did this was because they started from an existing L-head block and modified it to put the intake valves in a new, much taller head. This created a very compact combustion chamber and a higher compression ratio, boosting power.

Side Cutaway View

F134

The L134 Go Devil was updated with the F-head to become the F134 in 1950. This engine produced 75 hp (55 kW) at 4000 rpm (although it redlines at 3200 rpm) and 114 ft·lbf (154 N·m) at 2000 rpm with a 7.5:1 compression ratio. Bore and stroke dimensions were the same as the L-head engine at 3.125' x 4.375' giving 134.22cuin (2.200 cc).

The F4-134 was introduced in 1950 in the new 473 trucks. However, it was not placed in a CJ until the introduction of the CJ-3B in 1953, which had a distinctive high hood to accommodate the much taller engine. The engine remained in production until 1971, after Kaiser Jeep was purchased by American Motors (AMC).

Applications:

  • 1950 Willys Jeepster
  • 1966-1971 Jeep Jeepster Commando
  • 1953-1968 CJ-3B
  • 1955-1971 CJ-5
  • 1956-1971 CJ-6
  • 1950-1961 Willys Jeep Truck
  • 1950-1961 Willys Jeep Wagon

F161

Willys Hurricane Engine Manuals

The F6-161 Hurricane was an F-head version of the L6-161 Lightning flathead straight six. It was used in Jeepsters and Wagons.

BF-161

The BF-161 had a 318 inch bore and a 312 inch stroke, a one barrel carburettor and an output of 90 hp (67 kW) at 4,400 rpm and 135 ft·lbf (183 Nm) at 2,000 rpm. It had a displacement of 161.1 cubic inches (2,639 cc). It had a compression ratio of 7.6:1.[1]

2600

The 2600 was essentially the same as the BF-161, but it had 2 carburettors and had an output of 130 hp (97 kW) at 4,400 rpm and 140 ft·lbf (190 Nm) at 2,000 rpm. The compression ratio remained 7.6:1.[1]

3000

The 3 litre (184 cid) had its stroke increased to 4 inches, and had a displacement of 3,016 cc (184.1 cid).[1] It had a 2 barrel carburettor and an output of 140 hp (104 kW) at 4,400 rpm and 161 ft·lbf (218 Nm) at 2,000 rpm. It also had a slightly higher compression ratio of 8:1.[1]

Super Hurricane

6-226

An L-head 6 cylinder from Continental with a bore of 3.3125' and stroke of 4.375' giving a displacement of 226.22cuin (3.71 litres). Several references show a bore of 3.94' but this is incorrect.Horsepower rating is 105@3600 or 115@3800 and torque rating 190@1400 or 190@1800 depending on the year of production.
